Switchboard Upgrade

A switchboard upgrade replaces obsolete fuse-wire or ceramic fuse boards with a modern circuit-breaker and RCD-protected switchboard that meets current Australian standards. If your home has a ceramic fuse base, your insurer has flagged it, or you're adding solar or a new circuit, call 0433 462 902 or book online. The work involves disconnecting from the Ausgrid network, installing a new board with the correct RCD protection, and issuing a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) — all completed in a single visit. As a Level 2 ASP, we handle the network disconnection and reconnection ourselves, with no separate contractor required.
What's Involved
A standard residential switchboard upgrade includes:
- Fire-rated metal enclosure sized to current and future circuit needs
- Main isolator switch on DIN rail, sized to your consumer mains
- Miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) on every circuit — lighting, power, hot water, oven, air conditioning
- Residual current devices (RCDs) on every final subcircuit (mandatory under current AS/NZS 3000:2018)
- Type 2 surge protection device on the supply side
- New main earth conductor, consolidated neutral link, and earth bar
- Fully labelled circuit schedule printed on the cabinet door
Switchboards we will not repair — only replace:
- Ceramic fuse bases (pre-1980)
- Bakelite enclosures with burn marks at terminations
- Asbestos mounting boards
- Wooden boards or boards mounted to combustible substrate
- Any board with no RCD protection on power circuits
NSW Compliance
Switchboard upgrade work in NSW is regulated under:
- Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 (NSW)
- AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules
- AS/NZS 3017 verification of electrical installations
- Service and Installation Rules of NSW (network side, if consumer mains affected)
Required credentials we hold:
- NSW electrical contractor licence
- Level 2 ASP accreditation (Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy)
- $20 million public liability insurance
- ACMA cabling registration
On completion we issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) — lodged with Fair Trading and given to you — plus a Notification of Service Work for the network distributor and your full test results for the insurance file.
Pricing Approach
Switchboard upgrade pricing varies with three factors:
- Board size and complexity — single-phase residential boards versus three-phase commercial, number of final circuits, room for future expansion
- Whether consumer mains need upgrading — older 16 mm² mains often can't carry modern loads (solar + EV + ducted A/C); upgrading to 25 mm² triggers the Level 2 ASP component and Ausgrid network fee
- Asbestos handling — if your existing mounting board is asbestos, a licensed removalist must attend before we disconnect
We provide fixed-price written quotes after a site visit. Typical Sydney metropolitan single-phase residential switchboard upgrade with consumer mains replacement runs $2,800–$4,500 inclusive of materials, labour, network fees, and certification. Three-phase or solar-ready additions add $400–$900.
